I have a DIY challenge for all my DIY friends?
I am a journeyman electrician. I have had this idea for some time now that I think I could make happen, but unfortunately I do not have the funds to even attempt it. So I would like to see if any of you can afford to give it a shot and let me know how it goes. Heres my idea. I want to build a self powered generator. I have thought about this for quite a while now and I can for no reason see why it won’t work. If the generator is initially started with a gas or electric motor and then once started is cluthed out and is then sustained by an electric motor powered by the generator itself. I do understand that a generator cannot make enough power to run itself but through the use of step up and step down tranformers this can be accomplished. After all this is basically what the utility companys do everyday. The use of a low amperage motor and through the use of gear reduction I think this can truly be done and quite possibly be a million dollar idea as home and business owners could basically make their own electricity and therefore do away with these rediculously high energy bills. Any ideas? I would love for someone with the knowledge attempt to do this for me, I just want to know if it can be done or not.

This will not work……….. It takes more power than output is This has been the magic question for many years. The same goes for frictionless movement. There is always some sort of load or drag on whatever you do.

What about the IR drop of the power cables and connections, your hysteresis loss and the friction of the bearings. Also what is the efficiency of the motor and the generator? P (in)=P(out) less the efficiency of the unit. We’ve all thought of that at one time or another in careers, but it won’t work. I retired as an electrician, after 50 years of getting bit. When you think about the physics you’ll know it won’t work.
